Colors that I am made of

If colors were people how do you think they would be? I would imagine red to be the most romantic and short tempered all at once - also in many ways like a Cancerian... insecure, fickle, loving and unpredictable... But that's just my imagination. (Remember Big B???)

Anyway, so the intention of this post is to invite readers to tell me what colors mean to them. I feel a certain way when I wear a certain color. My wardrobe is about 85% black with a minuscule remainder of either shades of gray or blue... The minority ‘brights’ live a life of neglect and an immense sense of inferiority complex.

I have often wondered whether that points to some kind of imbalance in me. A quick analysis of  the situation that has led to my partiality towards black reveals the following: Emotionally it makes me feel confident and physically (and this is just me again) I feel sexier, smarter, taller and slimmer.... The last of course is a fact about the color - Black does make one look slimmer ... The rest of the positive vibrations may only be a means of letting myself feel alright to face the world. They may be lies that I tell myself but what comforting lies they are....

The few shades of blue make me feel good too. I feel like the evening dusk has just settled on me, I feel like the twilight, I feel vast and inky - mostly I feel like I am a good person. I can look people in the eye and talk honestly. I also feel very brave and mysterious in ways.

The only time I can smile at bright colors is when I have my eyes closed in really bright sunlight. Have you ever tried this? I would take the MTA to go to work 5 days a week till last year. While everyone wondered how I could take the ordeal of this commute - I could easily say the commute was the best part of the working day. I met up with my commuter friends (we were quite a bunch), choose the seat that was flooded with the most sunlight and start a game.

Darcy and I would take our shades off turn towards the sun and close our eyes. We would then tell each other what colors we saw... It was hilarious - we never saw the same color but the realization that some of those colors may not even have been discovered yet amazed us. All bright and wondrous... A beautiful world where only colors lived sans human, sans numbers, sans anything else at all. Fed and nurtured by the sun and sun alone.

White is such a pure color too but to be honest I can never wear white until I am assured that there is no unnecessary stuff in my stomach anymore. That it is as flat as can be and completely devoid of any matter that can cause bloating. I remain confident that I do not have to explain this point any further.
I even identify people with colors – some of my friends are orange, others are pink and still others are a mix of many…. When I do not like a client he immediately becomes a dirty brown for me and when I do like him he is a blue or a white. Gold is the color of distasteful businesspeople while Silver is the color of subtle wisdom.

When I die I would like to be dressed in the colors of the rainbow and laid to rest on a black sheet. I love colors – they have added meaning to my life and I remain assured that they will be there with me even in death…

  1. I like neutral clothing but dress it up with colorful jewelry. Love purples and pinks. Orange and green are not colors that I really wear too much.
Glad that silver means wisdom since I prefer it to gold!!! After reading this, I will think of colors from an entirely different perspective.

    Great post!

  4. I am definitely red. I am drawn to that colour like no other. Funny how I don't like the colour green - other than in nature of course.

  7. As Always you make me think, start my creative juices moving, make me appreciate the wonderfully creative people I meet out here and most of all make me smile. I used to wear black & some dark blue a lot. Now I seem to like black pants but with a white shirt( not a dressy white shirt with pin down collars but sport shirts) with the move to a warm sunny place I now seem to be wearing all colors. But I still seem to wear white shirts. wonder what that says about me hmm ???

  8. Colour is indded very important and there is even colour therapy. In a home i worked in once the dining room was painted in two colours one half was supposed to encourage those with a poor apetite to eat more the other side to slow people down who ate to fast and also reduce distress and agitation ;)

  10. Most of the clothes in my closet were blacks and grays and my bag would be in red or my shoes or my nail polish. :p

Anyway, I would rather be yellow and pink. I want to bright colors because it means happiness for me. :)

  11. What a lovely post Kriti. I love everything earthy, rust, tan, dark brown but my all time favorite is black, for all the reasons you have given, especially the one about looking slimmer than my usual self.I am a fan of white too. It makes me feel fresh and cool provided it is not the transparent variety.Ooooooooh I love this, it really makes you think of people in colors.

  14. If colors were people, golden yellow and saffron would pick me up from a crowd, not so much as to adorn me, but just remain visible; blue and green would shun me like plague, because of being partially color blind, I forget their faces; anything dark and blackish love me because there is no question of non-recognition. Grey is as old as me, and there is a mutual respect. White and I love each other. Very interesting post.

  18. @Dede - thanks a ton for coming by - yes it is silver for me too : ) @ Mitr - if you are orange - orange is the color of Luck - nothing less. @ Swati I love cancerians - you like it or not @Rita - I agree green is kinda drab - nature has a way with colors : ) @ Priya - color of perfection - anything you wear : ) @Sherry - I want to do it like that but my arms automatically pick up the black... I need to learn from you @ Jim - now I like you even more - you are just my kinda guy LOL @ Charles - wow! didn't know that. I need to get my walls painted again then... what's the color for the person that has no appetite? My daughter needs that color.. @Carlos - thank you so much my friend. Much appreciate your support. @Faye - that's my fear. The fact that I wear black should not give out the impression that I am not a happy person - because I am. I guess that's where I need to cater to the public opinion. Thanks for coming by @Rimly thanks a ton! Brown is something i seldom wear but the rest of your colors are mine too @YogaSavy - hmmm that is so true. Changes the mood you are in. Bright shades definitely do that @Thanks Roy! @ Tapas - you are too modest. All colors would embrace a person such as you. No questions asked. @Nirupam - would love to know more : ) @Alpana - thanks a ton for coming by sweets...

  20. Colorful, offbeat post! Totally agree about black. I love all colors but being a NYer, I end up wearing a lot of black. My favorite though is a golden yellow - it really lifts up the spirits.

  22. As a photographer I love a wide range of colors. Understanding color and how it affects my audience is important to me. A soft lavender and pink sunset is peaceful, a bright yellow flower seems happy, blue waves make me think of vacations. I also wear black often - I like the way it sets off my silver grey hair. Red is another color I like to wear - I think of it as a power color. This is a really fun blog! Now I will be thinking about colors all day.

  23. Mari - wow you should have written this post instead ... you have set my imagination on fire in a different direction now. Beautiful - thanks a ton for coming by and leaving your colors with me.

  24. My colors are red and black. I don't really know why, I just know that they have always been my favorite. About 98% of my t-shirts are black. I love the combo of red and black and whenever I design something those are always the main colors. What this means as far as my personality I have no idea. Great blog, Kriti!

  25. I often wear black, shades of blue, and shades of brown because of the slimming factor, but many times it is a print with other complementary colors mixed in. In general, my favorite colors are purple and red. I prefer gold over silver. I love this post!

  26. Fun Post! I enjoyed hearing your ideas, and it certainly got me thinking about my preferences. Believe it or not, I feel most confident in dark brown. Really.

  27. @John - red and black is a great combination - I agree. smartest in checks too - thanks a ton for coming by @ Sweepy - gold over silver ha - I prefer it the other way around - but I am thinking of trying more gold now : ) Thank you for being so supportive Sweepy - really appreciate that! @ Ardith Wow Dark brown is really something that I have to try out more often. I used to have a sweater long time ago in that color but have given up wearing much of that color since ... thanks for coming by Ardith.

  28. I like green and several shades of blue. I feel good when i am looking good; you know after a fresh haircut and new clothes. I was told green was good to me and I am a TarHeels fan since the third grade so, of course, blue is my color too.

  30. i took a quick quiz on aura today and i got the same result as i had ten years ago ;)...blue

"Quiet, cool, and calm, loves solitude and has no trouble standing alone. Blues are sensitive, truthful, spiritual, and intuitive--they often show signs of clairvoyance and ESP. They are the professors, detectives, and spiritual mediums of the world."

as an artist, i use craypas as medium and i love mixing colors, though the ones that i use are quite dark... there's another story for that ;)...

i totally agree with you re black... dress wise, it contrasts my fair complexion and it makes me look slim... on paper, i use it as background to some of my artworks...

    colors add spice to everything...

if i were blind, i wouldn't know what colors may do to my life...

  32. Really loved this unconventional post. Hats off to you Kriti for writing about something that surrounds us every moment of our lives but none really give it a thought. That is indeed true talent. As for colours, I was slapped with wonderment as I read about your colours because of the similarity we share. Having a penchant for the dark, black (the presence of all colours) is without doubt my favourite colour. My wardrobe consists of mostly black too and although I dare to be adventurous esp. during the summer months and try out all other shades, I have never felt more complacent as i do in black. However, if I have to choose colours other than black, it will definitely be a deep sea blue and darker shades of green. Although white is an immaculate colour, I always thought it looks good on others than on me. I would not choose a brown consciously. Someone said, "never wear the colour of shit" (lol). Here is my quick take on colours

Black: The colour of magic. My favourite
Red: Passionate in a violent sort of way
    Blue: Abysmal & mysterious
    Green: Tranquil & trusting
    Yellow: Playful & mischievous
    Orange: Religious & generous
    Purple: Daring & unconventional
    Pink: Immature & sprightly
    Grey: Brooding & contemplative
    Silver: Fashionable & superficial
    Gold: Narcissistic & naive
    Brown: Boring & obsolete
    White: Diaphanous & distant

  33. @Ricky - thanks a ton for coming by - blue and green are also colors of the sea - gives me a sense of tranquility @ Mou - thanks! You are a sweetheart. @Melissa what a wonderful comment - thank you for coming by and even more for sharing your colors with me @Yoshay - wow that is awesome. Like I say always you have so much depth in everything you say. Thank you!

  36. I close my eyes to see colors from within my body.
When i am angry, i see yellow. It's funny how those manila envelopes make feel. If I'm putting something in then to mail, i handle them more quickly and even get agitated. I love green, it makes me feel warm and on the grass and close to the earth. It grounds me... White and gold are very luminous and gives me a spiritual high...

  37. Sandra - thanks for coming by and what a beautiful comment - manila envelopes - LOL - so true : )

  38. Black is the predominant color in my closet but only because of my work. I would much rather wear lovely bright pastels, pink and a certain color of buttery yellow. Color does affect your mood and even your physical being.
